I’m not an “avid” bike rider but this was so cheap and is a brand name like Schwinn…. it was way cheaper than the brick and mortar retail stores. Total deal! BTW I got it for about $10, so I’d say if it’s still at that price, ya can’t beat it.

I have a great 21-speed bike that I got for a very low price. As such, I did not want to spend more money on the maintenance tools for the bike than I did on the bike itself. This Schwinn Bicycle Chain Tool fit the bill, but I was concerned by the negative reviews. I took a risk on it anyway and I’m glad I did. The chain tool works just fine on my older KMC chain as well as my new SRAM PC-830 (6/7/8 speed) chain. A few noteworthy points:

The Amazon page doesn’t give much details on the tool, so here’s what it says on the packaging: ‘For use on 1/2″ x 1/8″ single speed and 1/2″ x 3/32″ multi-speed chains’. I don’t have a 9 or 10-speed chain to test it on, but these chains should still have a 3/32″ internal width. I can only say for certain that it worked fine on my KMC and SRAM 6/7/8 speed chains.

The rubber ends do come off too easily. When the ends come off, the bar used for twisting can slide out. This is great for disassembling the tool so that it will fit more readily into a bike bag, but can be annoying if the bar slips off while the tool is in use.

The bottom handle can be twisted off as well. Once again, this is great if you plan to disassemble the tool, but can be annoying when the handle loosens during use. If you don’t plan on disassembling this tool (it’s pretty small as it is), consider gluing this bottom handle and the rubber ends in place.

The black knob has a retracting internal pin. You want to tighten this knob right up against the chain to brace it as the link pin gets pushed through. Other chain tools may not have/need this knob.

The grooves that hold the chain in place seems a bit too long. They are supposed to fit between the rollers like the teeth of your bike cogs. With this tool, in order for the link pin to align, the main roller actually has to be pushed down slightly. This means the chain ends up forming a very slight “U” shape. The grooves could also be higher to prevent the chain from slipping. Not a big deal – just keep the chain pressed down with your thumb.

I couldn’t make much sense of the instructions on the package. So my steps are as follows:

Place the chain onto the second set of grooves (the one closer to the black knob). The grooves should fit between the plates of your chain.

Tighten the black knob so that it pushes against the chain.

Twist the handle until the chain tool pin aligns with your link pin. The pins may shift slightly, so position it properly as the pins come together.

Once the pins are aligned, use your thumb to hold the chain in place.

Twist the handle until the link pin is pushed most of the way out. Do not push the link pin entirely off your chain, otherwise it will be difficult (but not impossible) to push the pin back in.

When the link pin is only hanging onto the last outer plate, remove the chain from the tool. Flex the chain back and forth until the chains are uncoupled.

This chain tool is not perfect, but it is more than capable of doing its job. If you don’t need to break chains all that often (especially when you have master links), then this tool should be fine for changing the length of your chain or making a quick repair on the road. But if you don’t mind spending more than 3 times as much on a Pedro’s or Park Tool chain tool, you’ll probably get a better tool.

Schwinn Rocket Comp Review

Good looks and good ride… on September 10, 2010
By rahouagi
Bought it two weeks ago. Relatively easy to put up, allen set a must. Few systems to adjust. Rides in silence, changes gears smoothly. Yet to ride off-road, but prospects are good. Seems to be manufactured in 2008, but matched exactly the advertised picture. Arrived in perfect condition.
Friends were impressed by the looks, and yes, it does looks great, plus I am satisfied with the ride.
Very good business, so far.

great bike on November 11, 2008
Having 5 inches of travel is really sweet it blew my friends away. You can fly down the trail and stay seated the whole time.

Left Crank Became Loose on August 12, 2009
By Michael Barton (Coral Springs, FL)
I’ve had this bike for a few months now. I mostly use it to take 10 mile treks on dirt roads in the Florida Everglades. Only guessing but I probably have near 100 miles on this bike. On my last trip the left crank nearly fell off. I’m glad I recognized the looseness before I lost the nut as I was 6 miles in from the road. I read elsewhere that the Truvativ Isoflow drivetrain on this bike is notorious for its left crank becoming loose.

For the rest of the bike, it has been holding up well. There are two pre-threaded holes on the lower part of the frame for an accessory attachment which I have used for a water bottle. I wished they would have provided another pair of holes on the upper part of the frame for an additional accessory.

Update 8/23/09: There was a clamp in the box that I did not realize until now that it goes under seat and pairs up with the height adjustment clamp to provide two attachment points for another accessory. Once attached the seat is no longer adjustable until you remove the accessory bracket.

Schwinn Magnetic Bike Trainer Review

Awesome!! on March 28, 2010
By C. Price (Bemidji, MN)
This is my first go around with a trainer. I looked at tons of them online and finally decided just to go for it. This one serves it’s purpose just fine, and I bought it for less than $100, and free shipping. It is somewhat loud, but that is just the sound of my tire riding on the roller. If I had a smoother tread it would quiet down. All steel frame, easy to assemble and adjust. I just use my gears on the bike to increase tension while riding. I set it up in my home theater room and watch DVD’s (with headphones on) while peddlin away. No more missed workouts due to weather. Highly recommend.

Very Satisfied on August 16, 2010
By Biker’s wife
This Schwinn trainer is very solid; it does not shift about; it attaches easily to the bike; it folds easily for transport in the car for vacations (what we bought it for); and it is not very noisy with trail bike use. Worth more than it costs!

Awesome product to help stay active in rainy/cold months on January 11, 2011
By zielskew
My wife and I currently use this product just about every day, switching off between 2 different bikes and it works perfectly. Very easy to set up and take down. Stores well too. No complaints here. 5/5!

Schwinn Solar Combo Light Review

I love this set of lights on August 27, 2010
By Christopher Ott (Fayetteville, AR USA)
These lights have performed beautifully and were easy to install. The practicality of a high quality light that automatically charges in the day when you chain it up outside so is always charged when you need it at night is fantastic. One all-night ride would normally require a new set of batteries in the morning. For any touring or serious riding this is a must-have. Not only does it light your path, but the blinking, strobing or steady back light makes you seriously visible to automobiles coming up from behind. It also happens to be attractive and the main headlight comes off easily to be used as a pocket flashlight or just to be removed in areas where you worry about theft.

Better than a generator on September 22, 2010
By GrPil “Book Collector” (The Swamps of NC)
I got the Schwinn solar lights for my new bike (also a Schwinn, though that was a coincidence). The rear flasher works very well, and has three settings, fast blink, slow blink, and solid red. The battery is internal and can’t be removed.

The front light has three LED’s and is decently bright for safety, but not as much as I’d like for true night-riding. It works well, but I would not travel at high speeds with this as my only illumination on a dark road. The front light uses NiMH AAA’s, and you can carry spares with you if you think you might need them.

Both lights detach without having to remove their clamps so you can use them as a handheld flashlight/signal blinker if you have need.

The solar charging isn’t just a gimmick, it works quite well. I have not had the lights die on me yet, despite frequent use. I like this setup better than the old generator I was using, as I can also charge AAA batteries during the day for use in other devices. For long bike trips or camping this setup and a set of battery size converters might be a very nice pairing.

The downsides: These lights handle water fine when upright, but if you have them sideways or upside down due to a loose clamp, water will intrude. I had water droplets in the inside glass of the tail light for a few days, till it dried out. Though there seems to be no evidence of any damage I’m not happy with water in my electronics. Be careful of placement and if you have to leave your bike in pouring rain, you may want to take the lights off when you go inside.

Solar power on July 18, 2011
By Mr angry
These lights are bright enough to get noticed at night. I leave them on the window ledge to charge, and they are ready for my couple of evenings of cyling a week. I got two pairs of these, one of the front lights died half way through a journey. On inspection only one of the batteries in the faulty light was making contact(maybe after being droped).I bent the contact forward now both lights work equally well.

Customer Review

Very high end for the price. on June 9, 2011
By T. Unnasch
I had been looking for a way to get a fixed gear bike for about 8-9 months. When I came across this, it had everything I wanted: Bullhorn handlebars, bar end brake levers, flip flop hub, and a lightweight frame. When I received it, I was disappointed to find that it didn’t have a fixed cog installed, or even included. This was easily solved by going to Ben’s Cycle (ever heard of it?) and getting one of their cheaper cogs. I am just starting anyway, so I don’t need something extremely high end.

I love the handlebars. At first, they feel huge and awkward, but then you get used to it, and you find them really comfortable, and very easy to control the bike with. They offer multiple hand positions, and gives you a lot of control with skidding.

I would, however, consider upgrading the rear tire if you are going to be skidding. My tire lasted about a month, and it only took about 2 weeks for the threads to be exposed. I upgraded to a Panaracer RiBMo tire that I am very excited to use.

I LOVE this bike, and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who wants an excellent start to the “wondrous world of fixed gear riding”. It is most definitely the best bike I have ever owned, and I have no regrets whatsoever in buying it.

Edit: When I put the Panaracer on, it was too tall so I had to take off the rear brake so it wouldn’t rub. I had already planned to do this anyway, so it was no big deal. It works great and this bike will provide a lot of good riding.

Great Product. Great Service. on July 27, 2011
I have 2 other bikes in my house. A Giant hybrid bike with a basket for shopping and carrying class materials (I’m a teacher), and an old Fuji road bike that I have rebuilt. The Fuji road bike was great to ride but like most projects it was a hassle to replace parts and find parts that fit. I ordered this bike to be my solid nightly rider around town and I wrote this review to show how pleasantly surprised I am. The bike feels solid and lightweight. The package came quickly with Amazon’s 1 day delivery option for $3.99, and the assembly was simple. The handlebars are not huge but actually the perfect size. Some reviews from other sites use the stock photo of this bike and make judgments, when in reality the bike is beautiful and clean. The stickers on the wheels come off easily and although the Schwinn logo is present, it seems to be done in good taste. If you look at their site you can see that Schwinn seems to be heading in the right direction by including more high performance / low maintenance single speed road bikes.

I had to call customer service today because one of my crank-arm’s threading was done incorrectly and my pedal ended up shredding out all the threading. If you are a cyclist you have probably ran into this problem before and know that this can be an expensive fix. Luckily, a 5 minute phone call to customer service was all I needed to do to get a package on the way to my house with a entirely new crank-arm assembly kit and pedals. I couldn’t be happier with this purchase. If you are on the fence with this, don’t be. This bike has quality that is well worth its price, add to that the fact that it is built by a company that stands by their products and the bike’s value far exceeds its price tag. Don’t be like me and tell yourself “But its a Schwinn…gross” to keep you from buying this product, because now I ride the bike daily and tell myself “It’s a Schwinn!”

I just received this bike two days ago, and so far I can say that for the money, this is a high-quality single-speed. Overall the construction seems solid, and I was lucky that the fit was just right (I’m just under 6’1″ and I sit almost perfectly on this model) As a previous review stated, the tires will probably need replacing before too long, as they don’t feel too sturdy. I already replaced the saddle so I can have some comfort in my ride (my tailbone is a bit wide for the packaged saddle). I own two other single-speed bikes, and this one is going to be my commuter bike for work (only a few minor hills; close to home). I’ll update this review later with my experience(s) riding this bike.
